Federal law requires that a flood insurance policy be obtained as a condition of a federally-backed mortgage or loan that is secured for the building.
The floodplain determination letter does not imply that the reference property will or will not be free from flooding or damage.
A property not in a Special Flood Hazard Area may be damaged by a flood greater than that predicted on the Flood Insurance rate map (FIRM) or from a local drainage
problem not shown on the map. This letter does not create liability on the part of MSD, or any officer or employee thereof, for any damage
that results from reliance on this determination.
The property in question may be located in a locally regulated floodplain. Properties within these floodplains may have limitations related to new construction,
including but not limited to, new structures, additions and all renovations. Please call 502-587-0603 prior to any planned construction activity. A property
which is NOT in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area cannot be assumed to be out of a locally regulated floodplain.
Flood Hazard Zone designations in Jefferson County, KY are:
-
Zone A is the flood insurance rate zone that corresponds to the 100-year floodplains that are determined in the Flood Insurance Study (FIS)
by approximate methods. Because detailed hydraulic analyses are not performed for such areas, no Base Flood Elevations (BFEs) or depths
are shown within this zone. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements apply.
-
Zone AE is the flood insurance rate zone that corresponds to the 100-year floodplains that are determined in the FIS by detailed methods.
In most instances, BFEs derived from the detailed hydraulic analyses are shown at selected intervals within this zone. Mandatory flood
insurance purchase requirements apply.
-
Zone X is the flood insurance rate zone that corresponds to areas outside the 100-year floodplains, areas of 100-year sheet flow flooding
where average depths are less than 1 foot, areas of 100-year stream flooding where the contributing drainage area is less than 1 square mile, or
areas protected from the 100-year flood by levees. No BFEs or depths are shown within this zone.
BFE - Base Flood Elevation (BFE): Defined by FEMA as the elevation of the crest of the base or 100-year flood relative to mean sea level. BFE is not the depth of flooding. To determine depth of flooding, you would need to subtract the lowest elevation of a particular property from the BFE.

What if I can't find my house number or street name when making a request?
Here are three possible solutions.
-
You may not have entered the address in an acceptable format. Please enter addresses in the following formart: House Number, Street Direction,
Street Name and Street Type. For example: 700 West Liberty Street. There are cases when the Street Direction or Type may not be applicable for your address.
Please enter your address in the described format even if it resides in a multi unit complex or is a half house or rear. You will be prompted
for the specific unit.
-
The service will return a list of candidates if your exact address, as provided, cannot be found in our records. In this case, please
select a candidate to continue submitting your request.
-
Another option is to locate your address by Parcel ID. It consists of the property's Block, Lot and Sublot values provided by
the Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator.
For example, the Parcel ID for Block: 014J, Lot: 0169, Sublot: 0000 is 014J01690000.
How do I know when the process is finished?
You're finished when you've received the determination results. These results are delivered in two ways.
- In most cases your request will be automatically determined and the results will be immediately displayed as a PDF in a new window.
- If a visual determination is required then a link to the generated PDF will be emailed to you.
My request required a visual determination. Why haven't I received an email response yet?
Here are some possible reasons.
- Results will be emailed to you within two business days from the date of your request.
-
If you submitted an invalid email address or one that is not spelled exactly as it should then the email cannot be
delivered. If your email server is configured to return undeliverable emails then MSD will be notified and will attempt
to contact you by phone. If your email server is not configured in this manner then there is no way for MSD to know that you
never got the email we sent you.
-
If you have spam blocking software and have not added internetapps@lojic.org to your list of acceptable addresses then you
will not receive the email.
What if multiple buildings are located on my property in question?"
If you submit a request on parcel that contains multiple buildings the results will read "A determination could not be made
for this property, please contact MSD for details". This is because MSD does not know which building you are inquiring about.
In this scenario, please contact us at 502-587-0603 and leave a message stating your name, phone number and address for the
property in question.
